Glencoe Youth Hostel in Ballachulish: Photos and Reviews

Set in one of Scotland's most spectacular glens, the hostel sits at the end of the Aonach Eagach ridge and near Coire Gabhail, the Lost Valley. Walkers can start the dramatic ridge traverse that finishes directly at the hostel door. Glencoe mountain resort, offering skiing and mountain biking, is a short drive away, and the Sustrans cycle path to Oban passes nearby.

Guests choose from solid wood panelled rooms, larger family rooms, and shared dormitories. A separate one-bedroom chalet (pod) provides a private double bed and space for a dog, with its own entrance away from the main building. The family room sleeps five with a double bed and three single bunks, plus a sink in the room.

The large dining room serves a wee breakfast for purchase, or guests can use the well-equipped self-catering kitchen with ample cookware and fridge space. Reception sells basic provisions, confectionery, soft drinks, and Scottish craft beer or wine for evening relaxation. A frozen meal brand, Pinkin and Mustard, is available at reception for easy preparation.

The hostel has a drying room for wet gear and a secure bike store, plus a token-operated tumble dryer and laundry facilities. A top-notch hike begins directly outside the back door, and the Orbital trail past the former Hagrid's Hut filming location leads to the Clachaig Inn. Glencoe mountain resort is nearby for skiing and mountain biking, and the Sustrans path to Oban is cycle-friendly.

Dogs are welcomed with treats and pet bowls, and the one-bedroom chalet accommodates dogs comfortably. The hostel offers free on-site parking for about 10 cars, but parking can be tight during busy months. The property is available for exclusive private rental, and the reception staff provide luggage storage, lockers, and packed lunches.
